Body-based Trauma Therapy

Danzan Somatic Therapy

Danzan somatic therapy focuses on cultivating a refined movement quality known as Ju. "Ju" is the Japanese concept of non-resistance, representing the sensation of neutrality that arises when there is no opposing force. This idea parallels the Taoist concept of wu wei, which embodies non-interference and purposeful indifference. Cultivating this mindful quality is foundational to practices like Tai Chi, Ju-do, and Yawara. The clinical benefits of somatic therapy in this context may include improved motor response, decreased central sensitization, and prolonged nervous system regulation, which can be particularly beneficial for trauma recovery.

Bottom up strategy

Our approach centers on somatic therapy that emphasizes healing trauma through nervous system regulation and physical sensations, rather than beginning with thoughts or memories. This method enables individuals to process trauma by calming the body and regulating emotions first. By fostering a sense of safety and stability, deeper emotional and cognitive healing can then take place. Techniques commonly used include mindful movement, balance work, and graded exposure to touch.

Integration with talk therapy

While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on addressing negative thought patterns and behaviors, body-focused methods such as Danzan Somatic Therapy play a crucial role in nervous system regulation. These somatic therapy techniques help individuals release stored trauma through enhanced physical awareness. Together, CBT and somatic therapy improve emotional resilience, alleviate symptoms like anxiety and dissociation, and foster a deeper mind-body connection, ultimately leading to more effective trauma recovery.
