Danzan somatic therapy seeks to cultivate a refined movement quality known as Ju. "Ju" is the Japanese concept of non-resitance. It is the sensation of neutrality that exists when there is no force being opposed. It is similar to the Taoist concept of wu wei, meaning non-interference and purposeful indifference. The cultivation of this mindful quality is at the root of Tai Chi, Ju-jitsu and Yawara. The clinical benefits may include improved motor response, decreased central sensitization and prolonged CNS regulation.
Ours is a body-centered approach that focuses on healing trauma by working with the nervous system and physical sensations, rather than starting with thoughts or memories. It helps individuals process trauma by first calming the body and regulating emotions. This creates a sense of safety and stability, allowing deeper emotional and cognitive healing to follow. Techniques often include mindful movement, balance work, and graded exposure to touch.
While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, (CBT) addresses negative thought patterns and behaviors, body-focused methods such as Danzan Somatic Therapy, help regulate the nervous system and release stored trauma through physical awareness and somatic techniques. Together, they enhance emotional resilience, reduce symptoms like anxiety and dissociation, and promote a deeper mind-body connection—leading to a more lasting and holistic recovery.
